Here at Hi Colombia, we like to cater to every type of traveller. We have the city and the Medellin tours for the city folk and the history buffs. However, if you want to venture out of the big city and see the beautiful Andean landscapes that cradle Medellin, a trip to Guatape and el Peñol is a must.
See the stunning photograph above of the birds-eye view of the reservoir; the water shimmering and shifting between azure and turquoise? That’s your reward for climbing over 700 stairs of the zig-zag staircase on this insane naturally-formed rock. How did it get there? What material is it made from? These and more are questions you can ask your experienced bilingual guide. Whether you’re in tip-top physical shape or are a bit out of practice, everyone can make it to the top, where you can even purchase an ice-cold Michelada – a beer with salt and lime. Never has beer tasted so good! Now you are refreshed, you will have plenty of time to take beautiful photos from the top of the rock of the gorgeous 360 degree views.
The town of Guatapé is also full of amazing photo opportunities. This colorful town is overflowing with local culture and fascinating history. Check out the Zócalos on the buildings, little colorful carvings on the outside of each building to show what the trade used to be in that place. You will see farmers, bakers, hairdressers and more – be prepared to get snap-happy with your camera! We will also take you to some non-touristy hotspots such as the quaint town of San Antonio de Pereira where you can swoon at its adorable architecture and Rionegro with its namesake – the Negro River, a tributary of the Amazon so named by the Spanish due to the dark shadows cast by the trees on the water.
Our departure times are flexible and we can customize the tour just for you. This is without a doubt one of our favorite things to do in Medellin. It is a guaranteed A+ experience!
